Mount Diablo after the Fire – September 2013

Project: Camping at the upper campground, Mount Diablo, California, September 2013. First entry on April 12, 2015

I visit Mount Diablo on my way to teach a painting workshop in Santa Rosa earlier in the year.  Driving up the winding roads toward the summit I decided to spend a few days camping there when I returned in September to teach again.  I am connected to these steep, undulating hills spotted with live oak trees, free of underbrush, exposing the underlying structure of the rock formation beneath the thin layer of earth and dry grasses.  I felt this same connection when I first visited the Bay Area in 1965.  I was too young to know what it was to be bonded to a landscape.

To be continued …
