Previous Weeks: February 27- March 4 and March 5-11, 2020

Art, Drawings, Morning Scribbler

Life gets crazy and the previous two weeks have been crazier than most. I thought I was caught up on my computer work after having to replace my laptop and get everything functioning together again. No … I missed two weeks of posting the Morning Scribbles. I scribbled, photographed, compiled and edited … I just didn’t post. Here they are … the scribbles from February 27th through March 11th.

An odd week. An eerie week. The world is basically shut down in an attempt to slow the spread of Coronavirus. My days have been pretty much the same routine as they always are. As an artist, I live a very isolated life, at least when I’m home. The past several years, I’ve traveled more than half the year, being home in only two or three week intervals. Last summer I decided to try something different, to travel in larger chunks of time so that I can be home in the studio for larger chunks of time. Fortunately for me, I’m not scheduled to head to Paris until the middle of July. We’ll see if that happens.

The world appears to be spinning around me in intervals of generosity, panic, and the eerie stillness of empty parking lots and closed stores. I continue my routine of awakening, sketching, filming, editing, painting and meditating. I am grateful that the people of the world are uniting to do what we can to save lives.

Spring is near. Daffodils have begun to bloom in New Jersey.

To save time and energy, I’ll be posting the Morning Scribbles once a week, combining all seven days into one film and one post. Ahhhhh …. so much simpler for me.

Morning Scribbler – Red Shoe

Art, Drawings, Morning Scribbler

Morning Scribbler – February 21, 2020 – Red Shoe – Link To Video

Time: 9 minutes

My contour sketches are often done more quickly than the sketch of my red shoe. I awoke with a bit of a headache and found it difficult to coordinate my eye and hand as easily as I normally do. This was an opportunity to slow down and move my pencil and eye very slowly, being more observant of the angles of the shoe and laces. My goal when I do contour drawings is not to replicate but to observe.

It’s not always easy to fit in a morning scribble … even if it’s a short one … but I do.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The total sketching time this morning was 9 minutes. One of the many aspects of sketching soon after I awaken is that my brain hasn’t really clicked in. Nothing is as it seems. That allows my imagination to roam free and my logic to become scrambled as it did when I noticed the letter ‘s’ was backwards in spite of the “K” and the “e” facing the correct direction.

Morning Scribbler Begins!

Art, Drawings, Morning Scribbler

I started a new sketchbook series this morning. I call it Morning Scribblers. Here’s the intro that shows one of my handmade sketchbooks made from used file folders. It also shows the tools I used in this morning’s sketch. I’ll be posting the actual sketching of the sketch in a separate video. I’m hoping that this short video will inspire a few of you to make your own sketchbooks and begin your day by picking up a pen or brush. It might mean getting up a little bit earlier. I guarantee you that your sketching skills will improve drastically and you will begin to design your sketchbook pages with a more experimental attitude that will lead to greater creativity, personal expression … and JOY!
